Marist College student Laura Sherland combined her eye for design, keen business sense, and love of donuts and the campfire confection s'mores to create what could be the next designer Dunkin' Donut.
Sherland, a fashion merchandising major with a minor in business from Smithtown, Long Island, is a finalist in a national contest to create a new, limited edition snack for Dunkin' Donuts. She dubbed her concoction the "S'mOREO." The raised donut is stuffed with marshmallow filling and topped with chocolate icing, Oreo cookie pieces, and graham cracker crunch.
Sherland was one of about 130,000 contest entrants and as a finalist won $1,200. If she beats out her eleven competitors, the 20-year-old will win a $12,000 prize and have her creation sold at participating stores nationwide. As of May 21, the S'mOREO is in the lead.
At school one day, Sherland said she and a friend started eating Oreos with a jar of Fluff, and decided to add graham crackers. "I've never really seen s'mores and Oreos together," Sherland said, so the "S'mOREO" was born. She noticed the contest on the Dunkin' Donuts' Web site entered, picking the shape, filling, frosting and toppings.
Sherland, who just completed her sophomore year at Marist, has been marketing her entry on Facebook and by email. The public has until May 27 to vote online at www.dunkindonuts.com/donut.
On May 28, Sherland will attend a bake-off at Dunkin' Donuts University in Braintree, Massachusetts, where a professional chef will bake the first S'mOREO. The winner will be selected based 30 percent on the voting and 70 percent on the bake-off results, and will be announced June 5.

Marist's varsity policy debaters, Margeaux Lippman and Chris Kozak, were crowned champions of the 2009 Cornell University Debate Tournament as a result of their exemplary competitive performance during the weekend of February 14th and 15th. Margeaux and Chris were the tournament's top seed, completing pre-elimination competition with a record of 5-1. They successfully defeated students from Cornell University, City University of New York, the University of Vermont, SUNY Binghamton, and the New School and lost only one debate to Boston College. Following pre-elimination rounds, Margeaux and Chris bested the University of Rochester in semifinals before winning the final round against the same Boston College team they struggled against in pre-elimination rounds on a unanimous decision of a three judge panel. Margeaux and Chris were also recognized for their outstanding speaking skills, bringing home awards for 6th and 2nd speakers at the tournament respectively. Their victory marks the first time since 2006 that Marist has won a regional tournament in the Varsity division, and the first time Margeaux and Chris have attained a championship as debate partners.
Marist's JV and Novice debaters also excelled this weekend, bringing home several awards for outstanding competitive success and exemplary speaking. Despite failing to attain a winning pre-elimination record, Freshman Pamela Chomba received recognition as the tenth speaker in the Junior Varsity division despite struggling to achieve victories in pre-elimination competition. Chomba and her partner, freshman Helen Chang, earned a pre-elimination record of 2-4. Marist's Novice debaters, Ben Davison and Lauren Hall, attained a pre-elimination record of 4-2 and advanced to Octafinals at their very first policy debate tournament. They struggled in elimination rounds against an experienced team from Western Connecticut State University and lost on a contentious 2-1 decision among the three judge panel. Davison was also a top ten speaker, earning the tenth speaker award in the novice division.
Marist's debaters will make their next appearance at the National Debate Tournament District 8 Qualifier, hosted by CUNY Baruch during the weekend of February 28th - March 1st. Lippman and Kozak's performance at this tournament will determine whether they qualify to represent Marist at the National Debate Tournament for the second time in the College's history. The National Debate Tournament is a highly prestigious and competitive event, open to only 78 of the nation's best qualifying teams. This year's NDT will be hosted by the University of Texas at Austin. Marist's debaters will also represent the college at Cross Examination Debate Association (CEDA) Nationals in Pocatello, Idaho at the end of March. CEDA Nationals is an invitational tournament open to all CEDA member schools who wish to attend. It is our hope that the Marist community will join us in celebrating an outstanding weekend of competition and wish us well as we continue to strive toward qualification for the National Debate Tournament and a final appearance in Austin for our graduating seniors.
